"Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold."

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

by Robert Frost

Today seems the day for poems. I don't often have days like that. To be honest, I think that I have very simplistic taste in poetry. However, I discovered early in the day, thanks to Karen, that April is National Poetry Month. Later some of my coworkers were discussing poetry and Ali (above) did a wonderful bit of her "performance poetry" for us. After work I read Terri-Lynn's Book Meme post. She mentions "The Outsider's," one of my favorite books as a young teenager, and my mind immediately went to Johnny's farewell to Ponyboy and the poem that inspired it.

How cool. The other night at my poetry group, someone mentioned that poem, and I recited it right there on the spot. I hadn't thought about it since hiking in Maine in 2000 (pre-dawn hiking ... nature's first green ...).

That was one of my favorite books (and movies) as a teenager as well. Thanks for the memory!
