21 Weeks

Since the most important thing going on in my life now is my pregnancy, I figured I’d jump back in with a bit of an update of where my pregnancy is now. Things seem to be progressing along nice and normally. I first felt the baby moving around almost two months ago, but I wasn’t positive if it was the baby or just gas until just before Thanksgiving. Now there is no mistaking the baby’s movements for anything else. However, the baby’s movements can not yet be felt through my belly.

The doctor did more blood test on me, which came out normal. Then last week we went in for the 20-week ultrasound. This marks what should and hopefully will be the halfway point of my pregnancy. My husband was quite enamored by the whole process. He didn’t get to go with me to the last ultrasound and he can’t feel the baby like I can so seeing the baby moving around and in such detail was quite the experience for him. Unfortunately, the still photographs just don’t do the whole experience justice, but that's all that I have to share with you.

The sonographer showed us the baby bit by bit and took lots of measurements and discovered nothing worrisome. We could actually see his/her ear and his/her fingers and toes, but if we found out the gender I'm not telling. The baby is already 14 cm long and weighs about 13oz. All the major developments are done, now the baby just gets to work on getting the details together and preparing for life outside the womb and of course increasing in weight and size. If I were to go into labor today, the baby’s chance of survival would be very slim, but over the next few weeks those chances will improve greatly.

What a wonderful picture!! I could hardly make out our babies from the ultrasound scans, and in those days they didn't give us pictures to take home. But yours looks just perfect. 21 weeks is a good stage to be - over the worst of feeling nauseous (hopefully), and also well over the most dangerous trimester from the baby's perspective. And, as you refer to, 20 weeks is the official 'viability' stage - every day now the baby is more able to survive outside the womb, although I hope he/she will stay warm and cosy in situ for another 19 weeks or so. Lovely to see you blogging again BTW

That might be the clearest picture that I have seen.
